Speakeasy forum: Need an axe?

Turns out you can buy the wedge in hardware stores too which helps firm the handle to the axe. Instead I plan to take my table saw and cut out center core (heartwood) from a landscape tie and carve the end to fit. I wish the hole in axes were like the one on my heavy hoe, with a sloping collar instead of straight. On that you can slide the new handle through the hole and then it hits the widening end where it can be hammered down tight and a bit of wood left for later tightening if needed. For axe handles they do it backwards it seems. I suppose I could make one that would slip through the axe hole the same way.

Woooo, I never got one. All I was ever issued was a sledgehammer to drive my grounding rods for SSB radios and van. Call the SeaBees to move brush away if we're lucky to have them near. Std. axe, hammer and long hand sickle otherwise, due to snakes and varmits control.

This was a highly sought after item, but the QM never seems to have anything in stock. They still make it as i saw it too in the magazine.

Us Jarheads usually had better luck buying something at the surplus shop and throwing it in the seabag rather than having it issued to us. I got my winter clothes that way for "cold weather training" and these were Korean issue, wool still. I learned the hard way in my early USMC service, just go get what you needed even after filling the paperwork. -----Willy
