What have we done for DIY Sites in return for their Service?

I am doing a bit of research on "Evolution of DIY Forums". So, kindly please share your thoughts for my question.

We all know that we all have benefited by these forums.

What ever doubt we have, we just put it here, get responses in hours at the maximum in a week. But, i feel many of us just get the information from others, but never done anything in return to their services.

What have we done to these forums in return for their services?

I think DIY forums have lost their way...

... mainly because the old " Boards for hobbies ", and the later DIY forums were run by enthusiasts for whatever interest they had. The bulk of sites found today when one looks up on the various search engines sources for DIY knowledge, end up being "For Profit" ventures that often give more advertising than knowledge.

The fact that the OP asks "What have we done for DIY Sites in return for their Service?" makes me wonder if they are doing a market study, rather than asking an innocent question.

I could put forth a different, yet totally relevant question. What do DIY forums do for the people whose knowledge (that they lend free of charge) makes the forums very existence possible?

Yeah that is correct, its an innocent question...
I want to get the opinion of all the users not just experts...

and increasingly news, in combination with a good search engine. In fact forums have faded some from popularity for opinions and comments at end of news articles or blogs lately. A forum is better than sitting a lecture, since it provides give and take on various matters, sort of like public debates used to in years past.

... and you know as well as I, that forums such as SE are more a source of propaganda (from all sides) than it is a source for accurate news.

such as Cnet. The owners offer a gathering place for continuous conversation on a number of subjects that allow users to share what they've learned and learn as well. That gathering place is ideal for reaching prospective buyers of products and services that the forum ownership offers and/or advertises. What the members do is simply come here with eyes and ears. Their presence here, albeit in a passive way, is what is offered. We are like a concert audience that gets in for free but is presented with purchase opportunities. Even if we don't buy, we sometimes put in a good word for the place so others will visit. And that's what we do in return.
