I do remember some time back and for a number of reasons showing mug shots of the accused was to be avoided. One reason is that, in too many cases, the people already looked guilty. Another was that racial imbalance was too obvious. Printing names rather than showing faces was considered a better choice. As such, it leaves people to use their imaginations. Sometimes it's better to just tell or show what's truthful.

One story I remember in particular was about an inner city school where 80-100 the girls there were pregnant. The "file photo" was of a pregnant white girl. Some investigation revealed there were only about 3 white girls who attended the school and NONE of them were pregnant. I just found it again, it was surprisingly FOX news and they've not changed the picture yet.

Demographics

So, what's the problem with news today? I'd say it's deliberate coverup at times if it's something the editors feel might not fit with their social views as they wish to portray it.

If one is going to shoplift, why do it at Walmart instead of some place with higher priced goods? Still, people with their finger in a jacket pretending to be a gun to rob a convenience store end up getting more jail time often than some embezzler who stole a thousand times more.

Our laws here have mandatory minimum jail time for use of a gun in a crime. If you beat the convenience store clerk and rob the till, you'll get less time than if you show a gun.
