I got into a discussion with someone who lives on their street. I asked him what it's like having them for neighbors. He said that having grown up in Topeka they're just one of the things that people get used to seeing around, and that he tries to avoid driving past the "church" when possible. One thing that annoys him is when they picket outside other people's churches, not even letting them worship in peace.

He also said that one of the Phelps children, who left the church a long time ago, was a friend of his and a good guy.

I also wondered what the presence of that "church" has done to nearby property values but he didn't answer that question. If you go there on Google Earth or Google Maps you can see a lot of "For Sale" signs on those houses, but one has to wonder what kinds of offers they're getting, if any.
