Unfortunately, that needs to begin as soon as a child is able to communicate with understanding. I believe I've heard that this needs to begin by age 2. It's possible that, at that age, some kids don't even know who there real parents are or who is in charge.

A plane full of armed people. What could possibly go wrong?

People would have been shooting all over the place, holes would have been shot through the fuselages causing rapid depressurization and the planes possibly blowing apart, and lots of people still would have died.

Archie Bunker once suggested arming all the passengers to keep air travel safe. That line got a pretty big laugh, as it should have.

Take one of these planes about to be scrapped up to 30K feet, flown by remote control over open water, have a mounted machine gun in the passenger area go around shooting off about 100 rounds and just see what happens. My bet is the plane gets landed safely, or it goes down in one piece due to some control wires being cut by bullets. I keep hearing this about them breaking apart from bullets fired, but that rarely happened even in WW2 with the bombers, which often returned to an airfield riddled with bullet holes.

Those bombers in WWII were not pressurized cabins nor were they moving at jet speeds. Their structure was such that they were basically a covered cage with wings which could continue to fly even without much of the cover. The same is not true of the modern passenger jet. The covering is a part of the structure. Also, notice the effect in your car of having the window open at 30 miles an hour. Now drive 130 miles an hour with the same window open. Extrapolate that from 130 mph to 500 mph ... you have gone from a pleasant opening to a mildly distressing opening to an opening which is a serious cause of danger and disruption. Hole appears and suddenly the pressure change on the left side (where you now have a big hole/vacuum) causes the right hull of the plane to collapse inwards, tearing open a new hole, twisting the fuselage, etc. Now there are little and big pieces of plane, bodies, and luggage falling to the ground ...

There are box cutters at work all over the place!

I carried a pocket knife with me on more than a few transatlantic flights. I am amazed to this day that they were successful at hijacking a plane with a box cutter. I find the idea ludicrous. The current program of isolating the pilot cabin from the rest of the plane is proof against such an action again. I also expect that should anyone wield such on a plane again, they would be pummeled to death by the other passengers. I'll put my 6lb laptop up against a box cutter any day of the week. Not to mention the presence of the armed air marshals ... So yes, I would allow pocket knives on the planes. I'd even encourage any active duty military to carry a combat rated blade. Go ahead, pull your box cutter. You may hurt or kill one or two, but you will be a pile of sliced beef afterwards and will have accomplished nothing.
