Speakeasy forum: CBS 48 Hours covering Adam Lanza right now

......of people who do these things. Often they're looking for some kind of immortality and the media gives it to them. We need to understand what causes people like this to snap, but I think we can do it without giving them the glory they were seeking.

A few months ago my daughter asked me the name of the man who killed John Lennon. I replied, "I know you may not understand this and I suppose you can look it up if you want to, but I'm not going to tell you." I then did my best to explain why.

This young man came from a wealthy conservative family. He was home schooled when his parents felt the public school system wasn't enough. His mother was an "I don't like what's happening with this country", gun enthusiast who not only exercised her rights to own a gun, but went out and got herself several high-end assault weapons... and then taught her kids to use them.

These folks lived in the right neighborhood. Had the right income level. Raised their children the right way. Believed in the right politics. They lived their lives in the way every conservative out their wants everyone to live. I would not be surprised if I was told the mom was an NRA member.

So, how did having the "right" lifestyle work out for them?

I saw another one of your posts trying to say that a middle aged school board rejectee from 1927 was just like Adam Lanza.

Face it, you are desperate to try and ascribe some failing here... but you can't. Other than a divorce, this family was a perfect upper middle class white family. They were a poster family for living the right way (pun intended).

..... and then the son becomes a mass murderer of school kids.

Maybe the "right" was has a few problems after all.

White, upper middle class, rich neighborhood suburb. Did not have to work. Had time to indulge in paranoid preparation for the coming class warfare that Rush and Sean constantly warn about. She had the time to take Adam to the gun range. She had the time to home school him. Did that leave any time to take him to regular mental health care appointments?

Face it James... this family had opportunities few other American families have. When republicans talk about their target constituency, they are talking about families like the Lanzas.

So, how did having the "right" lifestyle work out for them? Obviously not very well. Maybe if Adam had stayed in public school, the school psychologist would have pushed Adam into the appropriate care. Maybe if Mrs. Lanza hadn't decided to collect the civilian version of an m-16... maybe not so many kids would be dead.

The conservative platform advocates for many of the exact things that the Lanzas practiced. Republicans say that home schooling and guns make for better citizens. Well? Adam was home schooled and Mrs Lanza put a soldier's rifle in her son's hand. How did that work out for her?

I have yet to see anyone report on this.... did the Lanzas have a gun safe?

Point out a single post where I suggested such things about the Gifford incident.

I threw all the ammo away. They were on single digits in age.

The older kids before that were shown how distructive guns could be by shooting through a stack of phone books.
