in the United States. The much loathed Long Island Power Authority seems incapable of restoring power (How do these people get put in charge of something as critical as Electrical Power, oh, I forgot, buyouts. So much for Capitalism as the model for efficient management and operation of a Utility needed 24/7.) Three local Solar companies have jumped in to fill the void, powering up the Belle Harbour Yacht club and other local buildings, because of the size of its roof and the green space around it for solar panels, and anyone in the neighbourhood can get rechargeable items recharged, Cell phones, flashlights, computers, etc.

The problem with conventional gasoline powered generators is the absence of gasoline availability in that area and long lines elsewhere.

I suspect this will be the spur for much adoption of Solar power for longer term emergency situations. It doesn't replace normal power distribution, but if Utilities can't do their jobs, we're likely to see more frequent outages, and longer ones, as the result of poor management and the laying-off of the Union people who actually do the work, rather than occupying offices and smoking cigars and having 6 Martini lunches, and slaging the Unions.

Play all the anti-Union games games in your mind that you want, but they're the guys who do the work, and without whom, GM is just an importation company, and Utilities are incapable of generating or fixing anything.

utility considered "capitalist" in the true sense of the word. If anything it is closer to a socialist model than capitalist. That's why utilities have always been considered permitted monopolies, because of almost total govt control.

Wait,there's more ! LIPA's transmission and distribution system is managed by a British company in London which accounts for their dark ages performance.

Compared with PSE&G,LIPA doesn't know it they're shot,f'd or snake bit when it comes to dealing with a disaster.

Comparing system stats,voltage capacities and looking at their revenues,shows a stark night and day difference between the two.

No pun intended but there's light at the end of the tunnel for NY in 2014:

.....to never move to Long Island. Others would be astronomical property tax and insurance rates (home and auto), reliance on the LIE to get into New York City, and the throngs of people that clog up the roads during the summer.

I frankly don't know why anyone would choose to live there.

As I noted below,LIPA is govt owned and managed by the Brits which is why they are loathed.

If you want to talk about capitalism as a model for efficent management and operation of a needed utility,you need to look no farther than PSE&G of NJ.

PSE&G is a publicly owned,capitalist company and serves as a shining star as to how a utility company should conduct itself in a disaster.!!

When you look at financial stats of LIPA and their British management company,National Grid plc and compare them to PSE&G(contained in the links below): PSE&G could literally buy and sell both companies!!!! Viva Capitalism and the free market!!

Yacht Club is up and running as of a Month ago.

From PSEG's site
"The PSE&G Solar 4 All™ program will add 80 megawatts (MW) of solar electric generation capacity to the PSE&G electrical system by early 2013." Emphasis added. Never the less, I'm glad they have made that move.

Thank you for the info on LIPA, and PSEG certainly appears to be a model of corporate good citizenship and customer service. It's just that often private utilities are the problem not the solution, like PG&E have been. Since most Utilities are privately owned in the US, I made the mistake of assuming LIPA was. I'm glad the folks on Lon Gisland (well that's how some people pronounce it) will be getting better service.

Mobile crisis stations of various types

I recall that after Katrina, Tide supplied a mobile "Laundromat" on wheels to help people clean the few clothes they had. So, it makes sense that some solar outfit can have a mobile recharging station as well to respond in such crisis. I'm sure there are other possible mobile ideas that need only the investment and/or will to get it done. I'm thinking mobile cellular setup or communications center. -----Willy happy

that disasters like Sandy will be more frequent in the future owing to Global Warming. Utilities should at least be able to offer emergency stations for those items which are now virtual necessities of life, like cellphones, laptops, etc etc.

I was hoping that somebody would have noticed that it was 3 small companies, privately owned, which banded together to help their neighbourhood by providing this service, but that passed without notice. However PSEG does indeed look like a good corporate citizen and do appear to be doing a good job.
