Did these folks think about the repercussions of secession?
For all those states that want to secede. Just in case you haven't thought this all the way through...
Any citizen of a seceded state will be asked to surrender their US Passport. Entry into the US will require a valid passport issued by the state that person is from. Any state citizen visiting the US for longer than 2 weeks will need to get a visa. Work visas may be required if these citizens want to continue working for US firms on US territory.
Funding for highways, bridges, railroads, airports, general infrastructure, education, and medical facilities will end immediately. Representatives from seceded states will need to leave Washington immediately and reapply for diplomatic recognition by the US. All US licenses to conduct business will be revoked until such time as they can be renegotiated. Commerce treaties will need to be negotiated. Tariffs could be applied to many products and services traveling in and out of the US.
The FAA will not be responsible to run foreign airports in seceded states and US air controllers will be recalled to US territory. Travel to some states may be halted due to unsafe airspace.
All federal civil service workers will be recalled to US territories or their employment may be terminated.
The FCC will no longer operate in seceded states. Licensing all communications will need to be renegotiated. Telephone, television, radio, and internet transmission rights will need to be renegotiated and communications lines may be cut. International calling rates will be charged to people both in and out of the US, and possibly from seceded state to seceded state.
States such as Texas, Florida, Arizona, New Mexico may change their official language to spanish to accommodate the majority populations, and native language speakers.
Anyone receiving payments for Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, and Federal Disability will have to reapply for benefits and Congress will have to decide if foreigners qualify for US benefits normally reserved for its' citizens. States will have to take responsibility for those citizens within their borders who lose US benefits.
US Coast Guard, Navy, Army and Air Force will no longer be responsible for military protection of seceded states. All military bases in seceded states will be closed and related income will disappear. US troops and munitions will be removed to the borders of the US to guard against illegal aliens from seceded states from entering the Union. Military treaties and cooperation pacts may be negotiated on a state by state basis. In the meantime, seceded states will be responsible for their own self defense and border control. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for Mexico to retake Texas, or maybe a drug cartel to become its' own country.
And of course, it will take an act of US congress to forgive all debt owed by those states to the US federal government and/or international financial institutions. Sanctions could be put in place by the US if states do not cooperate with repaying their portion of the US national debt.
Yep... there are SOOO many benefits to a peaceful withdrawal from the US and NOOO negative drawbacks AT ALL !
