I think conservativism comes with maturity
Nearly everyone I know in my age bracket started off during the VietNam years as liberals out to 'change the world' and 'don't trust anybody over 30' attitudes of the 60's.......once they DID turn 30, married, homeowner, jobs, and kids of their own, people mellow and see the world entirely differently and reflect on how badly we were turning OUR world in a direction that really wasn't good when you compare it to other countries. We were changing into our own third-world country. It happens so slowly that isn't obvious until you all of a sudden realize you can't even have a disaster like Sandy anymore and trust your neighbor to not loot your house while you're out getting gas for a generator and take your stuff, including the copper plumbing that hasn't been damaged. Becoming a conservative is something that comes with wisdom, open eyes, life experience, and a desire for better lives for your children and you stop thinking just about yourself and worry for your country and what it's being turned into. Liberalism is what kids are until they grow up...which is why so many of them vote Democrat and switch a few years later. They are now taught to have their hands out to big government and embrace it instead of rebel against it like they did during the 60's, they are taught to scream 'child abuse' when they get swatted for stealing from the store, they are taught that family values don't mean much anymore because the government will be there for them instead of parents, they are taught that it's okay to take from somebody else in order to line their own pockets, they are taught that being on the dole pays better than a job, etc. And these teachings are handed down from one generation to another.....when it's what you grow up with and it's all you know, you keep that going and if a Republican comes along and tells them they can actually have more if they work for it, you would think they were looking at a three-headed monster. The message from the Conservative is correct.......we just have to do a better job at getting that message out and that will take time. It's like sending a drug addict to rehab and making it stick instead of having the patient relapse over and over. Long-term bad habits are hard to break........but it can be done.
