U.S. budget deficit hits record $438 billion for year 2008

The record $438 billion shortfall for the budget year that ended last week is up from $162 billion posted last year. The previous record of $413 billion was posted in 2004.

Bush inherited a budget seen as producing endless huge surpluses after four straight years in positive territory. That stretch of surpluses represented a period when the country's finances had been bolstered by a 10-year period of uninterrupted economic growth, the longest expansion in U.S. history.

Major rounds of tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 have also contributed to the deficit and renewing them — and their $200 billion-plus annual cost — when they expire at the end of 2010 would make it extremely difficult to balance the budget anytime soon.

A later promise to cut the deficit in half by the time Bush leaves office is in tatters, and virtually no one takes seriously his proposed path to a balanced budget by 2012.

it was $162 Billion(2007), it went to $438 Billion(2008) ... 2.7.times as large...almost triples in ONE year UNDER BUSH....How does that occur?

whereas Obama's been blowing twice that much since his first year.

Has it tripled SINCE he came into office? Has it doubled?

It stayed close to what it was when he took office...AND no one wants to pay more taxes.....Do you?

He's a recovering alcoholic who also used cocaine in the past. I haven't read his book so I don't know whether he says whether the pressures of the presidency ever caused him to consider picking up a drink.

He stopped drinking only after Laura threatened to leave him if he didn't, and he remembers the exact date of his last drink. That adds up to someone in recovery. He doesn't have to say the words; in fact that's part of the program (that second "A" in "AA").

As for the cocaine, when he was asked a direct question about it, instead of just saying "No," he gave some nonsense answer about how he could have passed a drug test within a specific two-year period of time. Again, do the math.

Someone tried to paint Obama as drug-addled. I merely pointed out that he wasn't the first person with a substance abuse history to become president, and wondered whether similar comments were justified for his predecessor.

Of course none of this has anything to do with 8 years of Bush spending, 2 Wars, and lowered taxation which generated so many jobs (most unbiased reporting says the jobs Bush generated were replacement jobs for the soldiers he sent overseas) and his Housing Policies, and his lack of Regulation of Wall Street and the Banks. The writing was on the wall in 2007, and Georgie boy did nothing. He had a chance in 2008 but he did nothing but play golf. He was finally bullied into a small rescue package. For people? Nah, Wall Street. His Kind of People.
