Lifeguard fired for saving drowning man

Why did they fire him? For saving the life of a man who was swimming outside the designated "protected" area. What was this kid supposed to do, just watch the guy drown?
I can see them having the lifeguards sign a waiver saying the company won't be responsible for any injuries they incur while rescuing someone who is outside the protected area, but to fire someone for doing it is insane.
