From Industry to Independent Consulting

I recently read an article that talked about this man's move from the engineering sector to independent consulting. How easy do you think it is to get into this field? I'm not necessarily sure how to get into the industry, do you have any thoughts? I posted the article below so that you guys can see what I'm talking about.

Probably depends on experience and reputation

This isn't entry level. This is for those with extensive experience. I'd say it's easier if you've 20-30 years experience and maybe even easier if you've been employed by the government and want to double dip.

I think, also, it would take experience within the industry itself in order to fully appreciate the benefits of consulting (the industry as in the financial services industry as working solely in a certain sector as tech might not be enough). Also, I don't think certain individuals are very good sales people in these terms.

studies that came out with pure ******** on how to do things in industry.

Very, very few time study engineers ever done anything but train and interned and followed the rules they were talked. Hardly a one of them ever put down the clipboard, pen and stop watch (ok that's ancient methodology now) and picked up one tool or one package. IF they picked a piece of paper up off the floor it was because someone dropped a dollar bill.
