I saw the shuttle as it flew over Houston, many yrs. ago. It was a sight and was lucky to see it as I didn't remember the posting or mention of it. It truly was a sight. It's about time that the shuttle should retire now, but no real replacement, so sad. Even the Ruskies gave up on a shuttle type craft. -----Willy

as it taxied out of Dulles and headed for JFK and then landed there. It's absolutely incredible....admittedly the pride of seeing it had me in tears. I never realized until one of the pilots/astronauts was commenting live that the Enterprise was never put into space, but instead was used as the prototype to see if something with wings that small could actually 'fly'/glide to a safe landing. It was originally supposed to be called the Constitution, but so many Star Trek fans flooded the White House with letters and petitions that it was changed to Enterprise. LOL

It'll be a couple of weeks before the Intrepid is ready for it because it will be completely enclosed to preserve it...no one will ever be allowed inside in order to also preserve its interior condition. I hope news programs show that crane lifting it into place off the barge. They showed a little bit of the crane taking three planes off the deck to go to other museums in order to make room for it. The crew has been shuffling planes around the deck for quite a while already in preparation for the enclosure.

I wonder what will happen with the specialized fitted 747 that carried it....and how many of those are there because there were at least four shuttles if you include Enterprise. I haven't heard anything about if they will also go on display somewhere.

The pilots of those 747's are unspoken heroes.....for how many times they have had to fly the shuttles back home to Florida from California and sometimes Texas over the years, they deserve some huge recognition. The shuttles weigh in at 90 tons each.....that's a lot of extra seats for wide-bodies....LOL The engineering that went into not only the shuttle but the 747 is amazing considering the total weight that needed to lift off the ground with only jet engines. The wheels alone are astounding......

I would take in the Dayton air shows years ago and have some video and take my clunky Sony Betamax camera to shoot video and got a few hours of stuff I wish I still had. There's a big AF museum in Fairborn just SW of the base. I've not taken that in but it's on the bucket list. I was hoping we'd get a shuttle and I have to think John Glenn may have lobbied for one. No such luck.
