Outlook won't open the next email item

I use Outlook 2003 on Windows XP.I had it set up so that when I finished reading an email and deleted it, the next email message would automatically open. Now, when I delete an email, it just returns to the InBox. I rechecked my settings as follows: Went to Tools, Options, on the Preferences Tab I clicked Email Options and under Message Handling in drop down menu I selected "Open Next Item" then clicked ok.

I noticed that when I chose "Open Next Item" the words stayed blue. Also, on the Preferences Tab, the "Apply" is grayed out so I just click OK. I don't know if that makes a difference.

Did you ever get a helpful answer to this or did you discover how to cure the problem. I have the same issue.....
