Excel time formats

Looked around under help but didn't see what I wanted. Using Excel97. I don't want a cell formated as time but I do want to format it as hh:mm:ss and be able to subtract, etc. But not as a date/time thing. My husband has been having trouble with his cell phone losing minutes and I made a spreadsheet to enter the call duration (which I think is since the beginning). So like Dialed Calls is currently 23:53:13. Don't know what it will show after 8 minutes? Will the hours increase? So what would the calculation formula be to subtract the prior duration amount from the current duration?

Just format the cells as time and do whatever you want to do with it, like subtracting.
I typed in A1 23:58:12, in A2 00.02:15, and in a3 =a1-a2. The correct answer is shown: 23:55:57.

But, indeed, it will do strange things around midnight.
