Problem with Excel 2007 and links

I have a lot of Word Docs on my machine and to stop me going looking through various sub folders for what I want I made a spreadsheet to link, so I find the doc I want in alphabatical order, click link, doc opens no matter where it is... so far so good. I have noticed though that the links keep breaking. For example, A doc called Beyond Time, is in C:\Users\XXX\Documents\XXX\XXX\XXX\Beyond Time.docx
However after a couple of days the hyperlink suddely reads:
C:/Users/XXX/AppData/Roaming/AppData/Roaming/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Excel/My%20FF/Beyond Time%20error.docx
instead. (note \ has turned into / as well)
Why does this keep happening?
My husband has written a small macro to look up the files and change the path, but I have to do it for each subfolder which rather defeats the object of the links in the first place.
Any ideas how I can stop it happening? Or what I am doing wrong to make it happen in the first place?

p.s It does it on all 3 machines running XP/Vista, and various specs.

That's strange. Does it also happen if you protect the worksheet? Unprotect only to add a new document.

http://www.google.com/search?q=excel+protect+sheet gives more than enough instructions.
