Thank you for your answer!
I tried to find this normal template, although I am not an IT, I completed all the suggested steps, but it did not help.
However my problem is not exactly the same which was written on the askville.
Today I have opened a Word doc in my workplace, (XP and Office 2007), and I have observed exactly the same: with this desired document a clean sheet was opened... There was no problem with Office 2003.
Could be a bug with a recent Windows update?

I know most are not ready to discuss how winword.exe is run but at this point you need to test one thing. Launch word with a document from the command line. If you can't do that, get your IT staffer to look into this. I need the result of the command line to offer any more insight. My bet is that the registry entry to launch may need an edit.

I've done this edit a few times but never wrote it down. I use what I know about windows and regedit to look at this. I guess you could check with associations and file types but we are beginning to move to deep waters here and outside what I expect folk to do today.

I really need some IT help for this command line whatever...
It is nearly evening here, so I ask my friend for help tomorrow.

It's not very hard. Just winword, the /f and the the name of the file.

Depending on the results, my direction changes.

If just the file opens, then I look at Explorer, File Types and the launch strings there.
If both open I begin to suspect Word addins, security and more.
