Word 97 to 2002 (XP) Format Issue

I have a new (HP) computer using Office XP home edition (Word copyright 2002). I transferred a Word file from Word 97. The file opens up but the page is quite a bit wider than the ruler and thus it prints oddly. It didn't look this way in '97. The pages seem compressed into a 9" long page instead of 11 and only 6" wide instead of 8.5". There is a huge margin on the right. When I open the file it looks normal for a second and then changes to this odd size. The page looks to be about 9.5" wide. I have tried everything I can think of in page setup and adjusting margins but I have never seen a situation where the page is wider than the ruler.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
