Bar Code Scanner

I have an inventory of books I use for my students. I would like to set
up a system where I can create bar codes for each student and scan books
for check out. Doing this manually is very time consuming. I am using
Windows XP. I am also wondering if my smart phone (HTC Incredible) could
be used for scanning.
