inputing chinese characters in Word

So it's a 5 year old laptop running Xp with Microsoft Word 2003. We're inputting English and translating to Chinese PRC. The system will only allow us to type to about 5 English characters before it stops providing Chinese character options and starts giving us the "inoperable operation" ping. Any good suggestions or is 2003 just not up to translating multiple syllabic English into Chinese PRC? I could really some help on this one and appreciate you all for your assistance.
