MicroSoft Word 2000 will not open (have renamed normal.dot)

I have Windows XP Pro with the current updates. Word 2000 hangs up and will time out showing a blank document (but no toolbars). I've tried renaming normal.dot and deleting the data folder in the registry - both recommended by MicroSoft. I can open Word by going to "start" "run" and typing in "winword.exe /a"

I've also repaired Word using the installation CD.

Any other suggestions?

i have the exact same problem but i havent yet found a fix for it, if u find 1 please let me know... gotta do some work

With /a or /safe (I don't understand the finer details of the difference) it's run without add-ons. Check those.

What's in the Word Startup folder? That contains things Word opens at startup. Something strange there and you get the symptoms you see.

Also make a new Windows account and try there. If it works OK there, it's some setting or file in your account. If it doesn't work there either it's on system level. Knowing such helps find it.

Ok, I had the same problem and tried everything like deleting normal.dot, looking for add-ons and uninstalling and reinstalling Office and nothing worked. I figured it was an add-on since it ran with "winword.exe /a" but no add-ons were listed when I tried to look for them. On another thread someone mentioned that add-ons can sometimes be hidden and I thought back and recalled that my problem appeared a few days after installing WinZip's ZipSend service. I uninstalled ZipSend and wallah MS Word worked the first time I tried it. So if all else fails my suggestion is to work backwards and try uninstalling programs you've recently installed.
