How do I get rid of page numbers?

I finished writing a book using Microsoft Word 2003. On the proof I got back from the printer I saw a few errors which I have corrected. But one error I have not been able to correct.
I tried many ways of inserting numbers (i,ii,iii,iv) in the pages prior to page 1 of chapter one. I first put them in the header and they look OK except I can't delete certain numbers on certain pages without deleting the whole group.
I then put these lower-case Roman numerals on my front matter pages in the footer. Again, it looks OK except I can't delete selective numerals without affecting all the numerals.
But, and here is the major problem, when I inserted the numerals in the front matter (title page, TOC, etc.), regular Arabic numerals appeared at the bottom of all my pages in the entire book. These numbers are just above the footer box. This is really strange stuff. I don't want these numbers because I already have page numbers in the header.
By the way, writing a book is a great way to learn how to effectively use Word.
