A small segment of the page number is cut off

In my 20-chapter book, the top left corner of the numbers 10 and above is missing. This occurs only in the even numbers with two or three digits. The numbers 8,6,4,2 are OK. And all of the odd numbers on the right pages are fine.

When I'm working in Headers and Footers, I can see that the dark square where the number is does not quite cover the whole number. The part that is not covered does not print. For example, in the number 10 the top left corner of the 0 does not print.

I tried enlarging the number box by moving the arrow <-> but this doesn't work. Do you have any suggestions for correcting the problem? I can't send my book to the publisher like this.

I'm using Word 2003.

If I make a new document, open headers and footers, do a tab and then Insert>Pagenumber in the header, there's no box around it. It's just a character field sitting happily in the middle of the page.

Then (after closing headers and footers) I can press ctrl-enter until my pagenumber is well above 1000 and still fully displayed in the middle of the page.

All I can conclude, is that you're doing something wrong. Start with repeating my little experiment, then if that works do the same in your document.

My numbers are "Outside" not "Center."

On the odd numbered pages I have the Title in the center and the number on the far left.

In the Insert/Page Numbers box under Position I selected Top of Page; and under Alignment I selected Outside.

I'm sure if my numbers were in the center everything would be OK. But as you see in most books the book title or the chapter title is in the center and the number is on the outside.

I guess if I can't get a clean number in the header, I'll have to put the number in the center part of the Footer.

I think I got it!

I was able to move the box where the field code for the number is. I tweaked it just a little bit to the right. The numbers now print out clean.
