If you saved it onto a CD, or other non-erasable medium, it may have the "Read only" bit set, and you won't be able to change it anyway.

But whatever you did save it to, just leave it there, just incase you need to go back to the original later. Keep it around as an archive.

Copy that .pst file onto your hard drive, and then right click the file and change the "Read only" property to 'off' (no longer selected).
Then try your import again.

Followed you instructions. However I am still being told I don't have permission to open

I am trying to copy my Outlook pst from one computer to another. I copied the original Outlook pst onto a disc. I followed your instructions as given to "fnerraw". I then receive an error message saying, " File access denied, you do not have the permission required to access the file D:\Outlook pst.

Please explain.

How to take ownership of files and folders in Windows XP

We don't know what OS you are using but Windows owns some files and if you as the user need to use those files, eg to import files into Outlook, you need to Take Ownership.

I read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 again and there is a step by step given there.

It usually means you didn't boot safe mode or Simple File Sharing was not disabled as noted in the article.

So you copied a file (outlook.pst) to a CD; but you don't tell how.

And now you do something (on another PC), but you don't tell what.

And then you get this message "File access denied, you do not have the permission required to access the file D:\Outlook pst." That's the full, exact, litteral message? In that case, what is the d:-drive? The CD-drive, or a partition on your hard disk you copied the file to (using Windows Explorer or My computer). You know, we can't guess.

Thank you Kees for your help. Thanks for taking up the cudgel. I feel you might regret it.

I have copied the file to my hard disc. When I right click and look a properties I see that neither "hidden" nor "read only" are checked".

When I proceed to open the file it just disappears.

I am obviously doing something wrong. Can you help?

I have discovered what I have done wrong and it's embarrassing.
I owe Bob, Kees and anyone else involved a very humble apology. I darn't tell you what I've done, perhaps you can guess.

At least now I know how to import a pst into Outlook correctly. I've climbed the learning curve rather slowly. So thank you Guys for your help and patience
