Weird Word Art in Word Problem

In one of my school lab computers (where anyone could tweak or break something) a problem has come to my attention where Word Art, after choosing from the Gallery and adding text, shows only a blank white rectangle. All of its elements seem to be set to "white fill" as the default, but changing any settings does not help. The "inserted art" remains a white blank. Word Art in Excel and PPT works fine. These are XP SP2 machines with Office 2003.

I'm planning on re-installing Office, but would first like to see if anyone knows of something I could check to remedy the problem.

Problem Continues

Back to this problem..... I deleted Normal.dot, and that didn't help. I then re-installed Office 2003, and that didn't help. Word Art works fine in Excel and PPT, but just gives me a blank rectangle in Word. However, I discovered something else: Double clicking to the right side of the rectangle causes the Word Art to appear and behave normally. Weird! What gives? Any ideas?

That sounds like the old display driver bug.

Some found their answer to be to lower graphics acceleration. I found my answer to get the fixed video driver.

Have you checked Tools>Options>view to make sure that something here hasn't been checked or un-checked affecting the display?

Been a while since I have looked into it, but I know there are a few software packages out there that let you lock down machines to avoide some of this personal "tweaking". To save you headaches, it might be worth doing some research into these packages.

For school lab PC's ...

I'd recommend to have them identical as much as possible and in a network, so you can easily (and routinely) restore an image. No need to do troubleshooting then, just go back to the standard situation.

That would be wonderful, and my goal if I were solely in charge of the PC Lab. I am in charge of the PC Lab only as it concerns my daytime college students; someone else is in charge of it concerning night and weekend adult ed classes. So far I've only met with resistance concerning any real, meaningful control, but I'm still hoping to start the next school year with better cooperation in that area.

All I can do now is go in every Monday morning and hope that nothing is tweaked beyond my ability to untweak it. And I must add here that this forum and those that share so freely their time and expertise are truly a great help.
