Office & productivity software forum: Umlaut over small letters in Word

I don't need it often so I use a font that has that character.

Fonts are available widely now. There appears to be no shortage today. Try Google'ing about such.

If you do not have Office 2000 and cannot use the Visual Keyboard or do not have multi language options installed you can obtain a dialogue box from menu using Insert -> Symbol
or keyboard: Hold Ctrl plus key for the accent (don't forget the Shift) at the same time, release all three keys, then press character to be accented.
For dieresis/umlaut letters, , use Ctrl plus : followed by the letter
For acute accent use Ctrl plus ' followed by the letter
For circumflex letters, use Ctrl plus ^ followed by letter
For grave accent use Ctrl plus ` followed by the letter
For tilde use Ctrl plus ~ followed by the letter
For use Alt 0181"

Are you sure you do it correctly?

Control-shift-colon followed by capital A gives a a capital A with an umlaut, followed by small A gives a small A with an umlaut. Have caps-lock off and release the shift-key when typing the a/A.

I don't have Word 2003, but in all versions of Word I know there's an Insert>Symbol function. You can select (and insert) any character in any font, including the umlauts and tildes (most standard fonts like Arial have them). Moreover, it shows you the shortcut keys, like alt-0-2-2-8 for small a-umlaut.
