Highlighting and deleting does not function in word 2003

When I highlight any amount of text in Word, I cannot delete it using the backspace key(it just de-highlights the selection), nor can I replace highlighted text with different text (i.e. typing I ate a hamburger, highlighting "ate" and then typing chew does not work, it shows up as I chewate a hamburger). Anyone know how to fix this issue?

or other highlighted items in Word, or virtually any other Windows app, is done with the Delete key, not the backspace key. The latter works only on unhighlighted text.

Hi Frank,

I use the backspace all the time to delete highlighted text either in Word, or any, (most), windows applications where text can be typed.

Also, when highlighted, I can replace text with other copied/pasted text, or replace with text I type in.

I don't have a solution for nsns I'm afraid. But there are two things I would try.

1] The usual suspect, find all instances of "normal.dot" on the computer and delete them. Word will create a new normal.dot the next time it is opened.

2] Uninstall Word, reboot, re-install Word.

That's all I can offer.

Thank you all and especially Nader! Here's his solution:
This is very simple to fix. Go to 'Tools', 'Options' and tick the box 'Typing replaces selection'.
Works like a charm. Wonder how that got unchecked though.

Not the sSolution for Me

This does not work for me. The "typing replaces selection" box is checked in mine and I still can't detete the selected text unless I respond "yes" to the query that pops up on the lower left-hand menu bar by typing "Y". The problem arrose after I reloaded the same MS Office 2002 software I had been using before onto my new computer. On my old computer, the delete key deletes the selected text.
