"The Windows Update service is unavailable"

The Automatic Updates window is all greyed out
(http://www.cs.tut.fi/lintula/ohjwin/winupdate/automaticupdates.jpg)
and I don't have any update service available in the Services list (not even disabled ones).

I've reinstalled SP4 but it didtn't fix it.

What can I do?

This is not the stock result of how Windows 2000 installs and configures itself. I usually see this when someone either had Spyware/Virus/Trojan issues or went to BlackViper's web site and disabled too many services.

The fix is never the same thing, but the story about how one put Windows 2000 into such a condition helps to find what ails this issue.

For now you can just run Windows Update.

Windows Update greyed out

THis is what resolved it for me

Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.

"The Windows Update Service is not available" and all of the check boxes and
drop-down menus are greyed out. Automatic Update Service is missing from the
services.msc list.
Can happen if the wuaueng.dll file is not registered.

Register the file wuaueng.dll:
Click Start, select Run
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press OK.
