Slave Disk installation problem

I am trying to install a second (slave disk) under windows 2000. I have connected the disk and set the jumpers for master and slave. The PC boots and recognises the two disks (master and slave). The first start of windows 2000 gave me a blue tombstone screen saying that if this is the first boot then restart or the disk is not terminated correctly or there is a virus. I restarted and all appeared well. Then after a few more restarts the blue tombstone returned and the system would not restart. I have now disconnected the second disk and the system is fine, but I really need the second disk. The Master is a Western Digital 40gb (WD400BB) and the Slave is a Maxtor 30gb (93073u6) and I am running Windows 2000 5.00.2195 service pack 4 on a Fujitsu Myrica PIII 650 with 656mb of memory. I have limited PC experience and would value any ideas as to what is wrong.

You must have a very old machine.

Today's hard disks are usually connected with SATA or 80 conductor IDE cables and if IDE you set the drives to Cable Select unless you are very very careful. On machines past 10 years old I see the archaic 40 conductor cables and use the out of date Master, Slave and SP (slave present) jumpers.

I'd recheck my work and make it match what era of cabling you find.

Yes it is old, but does what I need (apart from running out of disk space !). It is using 40 pin IDE connection with master and slave jumpers set on the disks.

I don't understand why the system boots up and recognises the disks, but windows 2000 can't start up. Surley if there was a problem with the settings of the disk then the system would not boot ?

But since you can't try to match the cable to the jumper methods used for the cable type used you best head to a repair counter.

Sorry if that offends you but I had hoped we could work past a common gaffe.

80 conductor IDE cables
