Removing unwanted files from hard drive

I have Windows 2000, lately it has been slowing down.

What program (s) could I use safely to delete unnecessary files from the hard drive? It has to be easy enough for a beginner to use, as I am new at computers.

I do clean my cache file often, I also do disk clean-up and disk defrag.

Would it be possible that using Norton for protection could be part of the problem?

No "program" has been found that would alert you as to which files are safe to remove. But most can be researched on google.com
