Startup Disk full error message, any suggestions?

I can't get past my password page and the error message telling me my start up disk is full I need to delete some files or applications. Any tips on how to get in to do just that?

boot from the DVD that came with the Mac,

although you may not have one if your machine is a newer Mac.
