Weird symbol appears near my dock

Hi all...I have been trying to find anything about this odd situation...it's happened a few times, and it usually begins with my switching in the dock from one program to another (ie Safari to InDesign, but that is not a constant).

A black box with a metallic-looking bird, like a creepy goose or bird of prey or something shows up above one of the icons. I am not able to do anything at that time, even take a screenshot, because the spinning beach ball is doing its thing for about 10 minutes after. I have taken a photo of it with my iPhone. It looks really foreboding!

Has anyone seen or know of anything which fits this description? Many thanks!
