Forgotten login password, vol not showing at recoverpassword

Hi - I've stupidly forgotten a log in password on my Mac, tried the recoverpassword prompt under terminal - all OK, but my computer is showing no volumes - and therefore no users to reset the password. Can anyone help? I'm tearing my hair out.

try booting from a Mac OS X installation DVD
