Why won't my mac boot into safe mode?

I'm running 10.8.2 on a 15" retina Macbook Pro (mid 2012). I used to be able to boot into safe mode but now cannot. It gets stuck after filling about 1/4 - 1/3 of the progress bar.

How do I fix this?

Don't know but tossing this out there.

A recent run in with an antivirus on an Apple had all sorts of crazy going on. It took the owner weeks to recover.
