Need help with new Mac Book Pro OS X

I am ordinary computer user. I bought a new Mac book pro and followed instructions from computer which suggested to transfer everything from "My passport" backup. The problem is that my previous Mac was very old and all programs, everything was old. Now I have Microsoft office from 2007, old Safari that does not work. The worst is that when I download a new safari or new firefox, I see a file Firefox 17.0.1.dmg.download and can't open it!
Where is the key to get my new computer working as new computer and run everything smoothly?

Here is my suggestion.

You reboot the MBP while holding down the "R" key and restore the whole thing to Factory defaults again.

Once you have done that and got everything working again, take a look at your backups and ONLY transfer those items that you have created or purchased yourself. Documents, Photos, Music.

Do NOT transfer ANY apps from that backup as they all seem to be out of date and will not run on an Intel machine.
