Alternate desktop views?

My elderly parents have a mac OS X, I don't recall just now which animal. Is there an alternate desktop view in which the icons are large-type words instead of pictures? I am thinking instead of the Safari compass, just "SAFARI INTERNET", "EMAIL" instead of the stamp, and so on.

is to make the icons on the dock really big.
When you put the mouse over them, they expand and show the name of them. Mail says Mail.

What you can do is remove the Safari icon from the dock, rename Safari in the Applications folder to INTERNET and then drag it to the dock.

The compass icon will still be there but the word Internet will appear when the mouse is over it.

Failing that, you could make an Alias (like a Windows shortcut) and put it in the middle of the Desktop. You can give the alias any name you want. CLICK HERE FOR INTERNET, for example.
