OS X 10.6.8 versus Lion

This one is about the reliability of OS X 10.6.8 and the newer versions of OS X Lion.
I have a 13 in MBP (Dec 2010 with OS X 10.6.8 as default).
While I have not had any serious problems with the running of the OS, I have wondering if I should not be upgrading to the new OS X Lion? I have been pretty satisfied with this version of OS X so far. But, now I wonder if it would not be better to shift to the newer OS and if this would also not make the performance peppier?
If I do go for an upgrade to OS X Lion, could this cause problems with reading any of the data that I have saved on this version of OS X?
I am particularly thinking of MS Word files etc. Will the current version of MS Office 2011 for Mac work equally reliably with OS X Lion?
Are there any software glitches involved in shifting from OS X to Lion? And basically is it worth it, given that I do not do any specialist work other than lots of typing, internet, and movies/music?
