Blank documents, can't open photos or itunes.

Hi,
I have had some problems with my Apple Mac & I have just found that my mouse was faulty. However my computer is now acting very strangely. When I open any document it's blank and the only message says there are fonts missing. I am unable to connect to my time capsule or open itunes.
Even more worrying although I can see my photos I can't open them. My husband died 8 weeks ago and these are almost the only photos I have so they are extremely precious.
I am running Mac OS X Version 10.6.8. Can anyone suggest anything to help?

Keep in mind that backups are not optional in computing.

While I have a few ideas, it appears the best thing to do is to schedule a meeting with the Apple Store and it's Guru to be sure the pictures are safe on another media such as a memory stick and tackle the other issues.
