dbstoner..
My apologies for not getting to you sooner. I just returned after a week "offline" .
You asked about a malware removal tool. Unfortunately, the 'resident expert' mrmacfixit referred to, isn't as familiar with scanners compatible with Mac's, as she is for Window's.
That said....
You indicated you checked Firefox's add-ons and extensions. If ALOT doesn't appear on the list, it may be because it's listed by a different name. Temporarily disable those you find questionable. See : http://www.pchell.com/support/alot.shtml
You can also give the (free) Revo Uninstaller a try. IF you see it listed, highlight it and then click "Uninstall". A window will appear with various modes to choose from. Select "Advanced". Advanced mode removes any leftover files.
It might help to know, if you found (and removed) any semblance of ALOT on your system. Or is it as you said, that it's only something which "pop ups from time to time"? And by the way, what are you referring to when you say "it"?
In the mean time, I'll try to find a scanner comparable to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (or SUPERAntiSpyware) for Windows.
