Safari would auto open files downloaded from the internet.
This is not generally regarded as a "safe" procedure.
Not totally sure what you mean by new files created there by another application.

When I do an OCR scan with VueScan, it creates a Word .rtf file; used to be Word would immediately open the .rtf file as soon a VueScan put it in my "Scans" folder on the desktop. Also, when I download an attached Word or Excel file, used to be either Word or Excel would open it as soon as it was downloaded. That isn't happening any more.

that leaves you wide open for a whole bunch of potential nasties.
Not so with the OCR scan though, you may want to check the preferences of VueScan

Even wrote to Ed Hamrick and wondered whether I'd forgotten to check some obscure check box (there are quite a few of 'em) down in the preferences, but he said he figured as long as I'd set all .rtf files to open in Word it ought to work. Which it ought to; it did before. This isn't a real big problem but it's annoying sometimes to have to go separately open files. Looks like I'll have to suck it up and quit complaining...
