Repeated System Freezes

Data: MBP (late 2008), Max RAM, OS 10.6.5
Behavior: Constantly freezes, sometimes on random intervals, but one day this week at precisely 25 min intervals. Except for cracking open cases, I'm user pretty savvy user and have tried all the usual stuff: PRAM, Single User stuff, Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, MacPilot, TinkerTool System, Cocktail. I've methodically Started after Forced Shutdowns (in this system freeze, Force Quit is not available) in a variety of modes, On/Offline, peripherals attached/unattached. I have reinstalled Safari (with extensions and early suspect). Most of this began around the time I did a Safe Booted Combo 10.6.5 update, though that may be coincidence. I've searched the web and the only suggestions I haven't tried are cracking open the case.
One hopeful clue. Tonight I have managed to keep it going for 6 hours without a freeze running in SafeBoot mode. What clues does that give me? What part of the system isn't running in SafeBoot that could be causing the problem and how do I pinpoint it?
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
