Locking a file with a password

iMac Intel i3 21.5" OS 10.6.5

Is there a way to lock a file so it can only be opened with a password? I seem to recall we had a way to do this with OS 9.

Locking a file via the Get Info panel merely prevents it from being trashed, not from being viewed.

but it does exist in applications like Word and Excel.

Not sure if Pages (iWork) can do it though

No, but you do have file permissions, so you can prevent other users from being able to access a file. If you only have one user account, you're screwed as far as any OS level tools go. There are third party programs that will do this, usually with varying levels of success depending on how sophisticated they are. Some merely hide files from Finder, others will encrypt them. If it encrypts the file, make sure you don't forget the password.
