I can't move icons on the desktop & dock icons are changing

I have a Mac G4, 1.25mhz,1Gb ram, 120Gb HD. I am running OS 10.2.8. I have begun having applications quitting alot, especially when trying to print from them. Now I cannot move the icons on the desktop (not even to trash) and the icons on the dock are suddenly changing to generic icons, starting with the OS 9 icons used in the classic mode. I would love to save everything and redo the whole drive, but hate to lose everything on the drive. Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like you have a severely bent system. Try Repairing Permission from the Disk Utilitiy (Utility folder) and if that does not work, you could try an Archive and Install. It's rather like a clean install was in OS9.
Insert your 10.2 CD and after it mounts, double click the Install OS X icon. After the machine reboots, go through the installation process but, right at the beginning there will be an option as to the type of install you are about to do. Choose the Archive and Install option NOT THE FORMAT ONE, and continue on through the process. Also choose to save the network settings and other stuff. At the end of the process, you should end up with an brand new system with all your old settings intact, all the email still there, iPhoto/iTunes etc will still be there. If you are using Entourage for the email, you probably have to move the MS data folder.
Try it and see

Thanks for the help and hint. I tried the archive and install option but the install program couldn't recognise the harddrive. No drive appeared in the drive choices. So I just had to erase the drive and totally start over.
Thanks. I had at least backed up most everything a week or two ago. I will just have to recreate a few things.
I will put this in my memory for the next time.

When you do an archive and install AND there is only one drive with OS X installed, there is no need to ask what drive you want to Archive and Install. Sorry, should have mentioned that. Once you decided to Format and Install, I guess the choice came back. File that piece of info under, "I seem to remember the last time........."
