Can a failing mac actually destroy a hard drive?

My macbook 2gig core2duo is panicking a lot lately, and seems to run hot. Since switching to Snow Leopard I've gone through 5 hard drives. Is this indicitive of a hardware issue (other than the hard drive) or even a problem related to snow leopard?

Yeah i blew them all out. Just seems to freeze all the time, even with different OSs. Note: red light stays on in headphone jack, and apple tech support help was unable to rectify that problem. Wonder if my main board is going....

Usually I see Apple Care to fix it by changing parts, boards until it works. Something is a bit odd here. Maybe this is not under Apple Care?

I have the same problem here: snowleopard on a macbookpro 2.33 intel core 2 duo 4Gb RAM ... also my 5th harddrive now
what's going on???
