Mac OS X forum: OSX 10.6.4 Will not remain in Sleep

This may help. Instructions are here:
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

As posted above, "I don't have a wireless KB or mouse, nor a trackpad. Just a CH Products trackball, Model DT25." I doubt if the surface under the trackball has any effect. What do you think?

This is in the System Preferences. Select it from the Apple Menu then Energy Saver. If the box is checked, uncheck it. You may have to have the system password if the lock is locked.

We still have the same problem. Another thing I have noticed is that the system will not automatically sleep. Even if it wakes, it should return to sleep mode after the set time, but I can tell each morning that it has not done so. I wonder if a program like Yahoo Messenger could be responsible? Although, when it sleeps, YM disconnects.

which you will find in your Home folder\Library\Preferences\com.apple.finder.plist?

Drag it to the desktop and reboot

I'll try it too. Although I run disk maintenance regularly and repair permissions often. But, this can't hurt, so why not?

Same here. So tonight I'll not even bother putting this baby to sleep. It's shut down time instead.

At least I have the satisfaction of knowing I am not the only one. I am sure there is an answer for this and I will not give up.

I haven't had the 'exact' problem you describe, but it's solved every problem I've had in OS X since its inception and believe me OS Leo took more than 18 months to get the kinks out. Panther was good, Tiger better, but Leo was one big pain in the butt after it launched. Haven't heard that about SL 10.6

One thing is certain, Applejack won't hurt your OS. If it's a software problem, Applejack can probably fix it. If it's a hardware problem, good luck with that.

My system is an early MacPro.

PS: Have you tried the Apple Support forums? If it's a common complaint, you may find it there as well as a fix, if there is one. Also, Google the problem as a question and you may find someone who had the problem and found a fix.

I had a Wacom tablet attached to a usb port linked to a hub. After I removed the connection to the hub the computer began sleeping as I wanted it to. So far so good, no waking in the middle of the night and so forth. This might solve some problems, just undo a usb port that you might suspect of recycling on and off. By the way, I do have an external usb hard drive for backup (it's directly plugged to the back of the imac) but this keeps working as usual and did not cause the computer to wake or the monitor to light up the room.
