Mac OS X forum: iMac G5 won't wake up

Well with the wireless keyboard and mouse you have to press the connect buttons. First you press the connect button on the keyboard and then the mouse, which will let the keyboard recognize the mouse and the computer recognize the keyboard and mouse combo. maybe this will work for bluetooth too because they both operate with radio waves.

When the iMac goes to sleep so does the bluetooth and the iMac has to be awake before the bluetooth with work, there is nothing that can wake the bluetooth up before the computer. You have to wake the iMac up and then bluetooth will start and recognize your keyboard and mouse.

There are 2 things you can do...1 is get a wired keyboard with a wireless mouse. That way when you wake hit the keyboard it is wired to the iMac and will tell it to wake up...2 would be to push the power button 1 quick time. Do not push and hold the power button, that will force the iMac to shut down and you want to avoid doing that if possible.

I have a PowerMac that will not wake from either the keyboard or mouse also and I use the 1 quick toutch of the power button to not only wake it from sleep but also to put it to sleep if I dont want to wait the 15 miutes for it to go to sleep on it's own.

I just remembered... the power button will wake your computer from sleep. You don't have to buy a wired keyboard. Once you have woken your computer from sleep, you pair your keyboard & mouse to your computer the way you normally do.

Sleep mode is an energy saver feature from which the machine can get back into a working condition faster than booting up from scratch.
The HD's are spun down and the monitor is also powered down.
It is used on laptops all the time to conserve battery power and is the default setting on new Mac machines.
I have no idea why your IT man had an aversion to sleep mode for the PC but I guess he had a reason.
I leave my machines running 24/7 but they go into sleep mode after a few hours.
