iMac always booting into Verbose mode - what's wrong?

Hi, everyone. I'm hoping that some of you can help me with this problem.

I have an iMac that for the past year has been running OS X 10.5.x

Every time I restart, the Mac reboots into what *appears* to be verbose mode for about 5-10 seconds, then continues to boot into the normal Mac screen.

I just installed OS X 10.6, hoping that would solve the problem. It didn't.

I created a new user. Same problem.

I even installed a fresh copy of OS X 10.5 onto a brand new external drive. Even when I start up from this external drive and restart, my iMac first goes into this verbose-like mode.

Of course I have repaired permissions, repaired the disk, run fsck, etc.

Please help solve this problem.

try resetting the NVRAM

first method.

Shut down the computer.
Restart and immediately after the first chime, hold down the Command+Option+P+R keys until you hear the second chime.
You may want to practice getting your fingers in the right place first. happy
If that solution works, you'e done.

If not
Second method.

Shut down the computer
Restart and hold down the command + option + o + f keys.
When you see the grey screen telling you to release the keys, do so.
Now type:
reset-nvram (press return)
set-defaults (press return)
reset-all (press return)

mrmacfixit - Thank you!

I tried resetting the PRAM, and it did the trick! I didn't need to reset the NVRAM.

Just for my knowledge (and curiosity)...

1. What could have caused this problem to start happening?

2. What does resetting the PRAM do to correct this problem?

Resetting the Parameter RAM (PRAM, commonly known as Zapping, ) forces the Mac to reload that chip with a default set of parameters. Time, Date, and a bunch of other stuff, are all stored in that piece of RAM, which is why your computer remembers these things even though it is powered down.

Non Volatile RAM (VRAM) does the same thing. It's called different things depending on what series of Mac you have.

1. It just happens. Just like preference files going corrupt and causing things to not behave as expected.

2. PRAM gets reloaded with a fresh copy of the default parameters, as it was when new and before you told it what the correct time zone was.
