Snow Leopard, Mail application not opening

As soon as Mail 4.0 is trying to open my different folder, the colour wheel is turning a few second, and then the application crashes.

I have tried to restart the Mac with Mail 3.6 but with an error message 'Your OS cannot open a previous version of Mail (3.6).'

A disaster. Mail keeps crashing in Snow Leopard. First the spinning wheel comes, then it crashes. When I try to restart, it says "Mail canceling restart..." Spinning wheel also in menu bar. It doesn't respond. Go to System Preferences and it freezes after showing spinning ball.

Snow Leopard Mail and dock

I've had another variant. When working in Mail, the Dock stops responding, and I can't hide applications or use the switcher. If I stay with Thunderbird, all works fine. Go figure.

Mail crashes on opening

I never really wanted to use Mail before, but thought I'd try it out now for the Exchange support. It opens, and sometimes is responsive for a couple seconds, but then freezes with a permanent spinning wheel. I wonder if this will be resolved sad

In the meantime, I'm stuck with Entourage, which just recently all but dropped Hotmail support.

I had the same problem...

... dating back to what i considered the ill-fated Safari 4 beta.

Then,

I trashed the Apple Mail preferences (Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist), and set up my account from scratch.

Voila.

Problem solved.

That was about 2 weeks ago, and it has worked perfectly since.

Almost, but not quite...

I nixed the pref file, and at first it appeared to work. THe account setup window opened instead of the main Mail window, probably because that's what i managed to open last time it crashed. I was even able to enter all my hotmail info, but once it returned to the main Mail window, it crashed again sad

If anyone else is experiencing similar issues or has other ideas for a fix, please let me know happy

Hotmail

does not even get any love from Microsoft.

It may (or may not, as things go), fix your troubles, but I would seriously consider gmail or some other supported IMAP mail account.

... is the way to go. I'm glad I created a gmail account a year ago. It's pretty funny that it works better with Entourage than Hotmail does!
