Started automatically downloading "Desktop" text files?

Starting a few days ago, my Mac has started automatically downloading an empty text file called "Desktop" (Desktop-1-1, Desktop-1-2, etc).

These files are piling up in my User folder.

The download seems to be linked to landing on random webpages (including major commercial sites like Yahoo). I does not happen most of the time, but at random intervals.

Does anyone know why this has started happening after almost four years with the same computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated

My system:

MacBook
10.4.11
1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo
1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

A desktop 1-1 on August 16th, and a desktop 2-1 (or was it 1-2?) today, when I went to an article on a major website. I happened to see the download happening, had to look around and luckily, found the two of them in my user folder, and deleted both immediately, jut to play it safe.

My config is much different than yours:
iMac Flat Panel 700 mhz G4 chip, 512 mb, OX X 10.4.11.

I deleted those files yesterday but noticed one downloading just now. I checked and I've got three folders in my user directory, Desktop-1, Desktop-2, and Desktop-3, the first being again from August 16, the second from this morning, and the third from right now. Not sure whether to delete them again, or what to do!
