Mac OS X forum: cannot get to yahoo mail, my ebay, or facebook login pages

Neither firefox nor safari will take me to the above referenced login pages. I get an error message on safari stating that it cannot connect to the secure server on those pages.

I have run all updates for operating system, and safari . I have cleared the caches in both accounts of both browsers too. I have tried the fixes suggested in the safari question mark box, except for adjusting the "proxy" settings, because I don't understand what this means or the implications of changing the proxy settings.it is currently set at FTS which I suppose was the default cause I've never touched this setting since we received bought to computer.

I have turned off all parental controls.

I don't if this has anything to do with creating this problem but a month ago I made myself an administrator in order to apply parental controls,, and have not used the imac since. My son returned from being away after one month, this issue arose the first time he used the computer.

Since the issue is with both firefox and safari, I suspect the problem is not rooted in the browser, but that's only my guess.

I would be grateful for any advice how to solve this.
